Tips for Combining Cannabis and Yoga

Tips for Combining Cannabis and Yoga

By Stacey Mulvey

All things being equal, it’s probably easier to get high than it is to exercise. When it comes to exertion, we find a million excuses to let ourselves off the hook when we want to find them, so I think it’s important to put more emphasis on doing yoga, than it is to worry about how to work cannabis into the equation. Because there’s virtually no wrong way to get stoned.

Here’s six tips for infusing cannabis and yoga at home.

Use your mind.

It’s easier to keep your mind engaged with your movement after ingesting cannabis, but staying mindful takes practice, and comes with time.

Breathe.

A recommended object of your attention is your breath.

Clear a space.

Organizing your environment serves the practical purpose of making room for moving your body in space, but it also serves an emotional purpose as well. It’s sort of like cultivating soil. The act of putting things away sets an intention, and gets your head in the space before you even start to move.

Prepare a little ritual.

This can be completely secular, with no higher meaning imposed. I am not religious, but I find that setting my cannabis out in a specific way keeps me in a mindset that I am doing something beyond the ordinary.

Stay in touch with blood-sugar levels.

Cannabis affect your circulation, so it’s good to check in with how you’re feeling hunger-wise before you start. An empty stomach will demand attention, but a bloated belly can interfere with feeling your core.

Listen to your body.

Get curious about the quality of the sensation you experience. You can’t heal what you’re not aware of, and once you start listening, you may be surprised by the messages you start receiving. I recently had an ah-ha moment with my posture.

About Stacey Mulvey

Stacey Mulvey loves teaching movement, viewing it as a spectrum of energy--from yin to yang and everything in between. She began practicing and teaching mindful movement in Callanetics after having an epiphany about mortality and taking control of her own quality of life. Eventually, Mulvey discovered that cannabis helped her concentrate and enhanced her motivation. Mulvey studied at Naropa University in yoga, painting, and psychology. After completing her coursework honing her skills in mindful and meditative practices, Mulvey launched Marijuasana and dedicates her life to the coalition of cannabis and yoga.
